A holiday tradition in Belleville, Trenton and Picton returns Thursday for the month of December – FEED THE METER! Now in its 14th year, the Feed the Meter campaign, will continue to raise funds in support of Student Nutrition Programs in Hastings and Prince Edward counties. When parking downtown this holiday season, please give generously to help feed students’ potential. All funds collected in downtown parking meters during the month of December 2022 will support Food for Learning’s breakfast, snack, and lunch programs in area schools. New this year in Trenton, donations boxes can be found in local businesses, as meters have been removed.
With the rising costs of food, there is no surprise that the costs to feed students while attending school has also seen a rise in prices. As families feel the pressure to feed everyone at home, relying on a Food for Learning program while attending school will provide relief to many. When you Feed The Meter, you will help feed local students.
Children and youth in our community continue to experience hunger for a wide variety of reasons. We know that when students participate in a Food for Learning program, they are engaged in their learning, experience a sense of belonging at school, and develop lifelong healthy eating habits. Food for Learning can help improve the lives of students by providing food at school.
When describing the impact of the Food for Learning program at their own school, a Program Coordinator shared, “Students don’t always come to school with lunches and snacks. Teachers have reported that students are more focused and alert once they have had nutritious food from this program. The nutrition program has benefited the students in their eating habits and has provided a variety of foods that students have asked for at home. The program sends home recipes for those requesting them as well.”
It is through the support of generous donors, volunteers and school staff that Student Nutrition Programs have such a positive impact on students; thank you to all who help us continue to support Food for Learning.
